Or choose them. Files are processed in this tab and never uploaded to any server.

Pasting a spreadsheet into a chat or a document rarely survives the trip: tabs collapse, dates turn into five-digit numbers, formulas become #REF. This converter reads the .xlsx itself — shared strings, inline strings, booleans, cached formula results and the number formats that mark a cell as a date — and writes one Markdown table per sheet, the way markitdown prepares a workbook for a language model. Each sheet is also offered as a CSV. Everything happens in the tab; a workbook of customer data never reaches a server.

How it works

  • Every sheet in the workbook is converted under its own heading; type a sheet name to convert just one.
  • Excel's serial dates are converted to ISO dates when the cell's number format is a date format, including custom formats like yyyy-mm-dd and d-mmm-yy.
  • A row limit keeps a 200,000-row export from producing a 200,000-row table; the stats say how many rows were left out so you can raise it deliberately.

Where your data goes

Nowhere. This tool runs entirely in your browser: the text you paste is processed by the page and is never transmitted to a server or written to a log.

This tool is free and needs no account. Its results exist only in your open page and are not saved anywhere.

What it costs

This tool is free, with no sign-in and no points.

Common questions

Why do some formulas show as empty cells?
The converter uses the cached value Excel saved with the formula; it does not recalculate. A workbook saved by a tool that writes formulas without values (some Python libraries do) has nothing cached, and those cells come out empty. Open and save it in Excel or LibreOffice once to fill them in.
Is formatting — bold, colours, merged cells — preserved?
No. Markdown tables have no cell formatting, and merged cells are flattened: the value appears in the top-left cell of the merge and the others are empty, which is also how the data is stored in the file.
Can it open .xls or .csv files?
Not .xls, which is a binary format from before 2007 — save it as .xlsx first. A .csv is already text; use the CSV to Markdown tool for that, which also handles delimiter and quoting options.

The open-source behind it

This tool is a self-contained implementation. microsoft/markitdown (MIT) does the same job as a library — if you need this behaviour inside your own program, start there rather than calling a web page.
