Semantic memory

Semantic memory is the ability to store and recall facts and meanings, separate from the specific time or place you learned them.

In AI tools, semantic memory generally means saved knowledge about facts, definitions, preferences, or concepts that can be used later, rather than a full record of a conversation. It matters because it can help a tool respond consistently and avoid making you repeat basic information. For example, if you tell an AI assistant that your team calls its weekly report the “blue sheet,” semantic memory could let it understand that term in a future request. It is different from remembering a single chat turn; it is more like keeping a small, organized set of useful facts.
