Trajectory

The sequence of steps an AI system takes—including actions, inputs, and results—as it works toward a goal.

In AI tools, a trajectory is the path the system follows while completing a task, not just the final answer. It can include reading your request, asking follow-up questions, choosing tools, making changes, checking results, and revising. This matters because two runs can end with different outcomes, and looking at the steps helps you see where things went wrong, whether the process was sensible, and how to steer it next time. For example, if an assistant plans a trip, its trajectory might be: collect your dates, compare options, check constraints, then suggest an itinerary.
