AI Frontiers founder John Langford says Microsoft Research group is ending

John Langford, a founding leader of Microsoft Research's AI Frontiers group, wrote that the group is finished. AI Frontiers was created in 2023 to organize larger, coordinated research efforts; Langford says it grew to about 50 people and worked on agent systems including the AutoGen orchestration framework and the Fara computer-use agent, plus shared pretraining code inside Microsoft Research. In early September, he writes, the group was reorganized into Microsoft AI, whose leadership from Inflection favors scaling over research. Langford says he found the two approaches incompatible, placed his people as best he could, and left, adding that other founding leaders reached similar conclusions and that there will be no AI Frontiers internships next year.
