What it does

OpenRouter is an AI tool for using LLM APIs, building AI agents and chatting with an AI assistant. It has a free plan.

OpenRouter is a hosted gateway that gives developers a single API endpoint to reach models from a wide range of AI providers. The API accepts standard HTTP requests, works as a drop-in replacement for the OpenAI SDK, and is paired with a web chat interface for trying models directly. OpenRouter watches provider response times, error rates and availability, then retries another provider when a request fails. Teams can pin traffic to preferred providers, let requests go to the most cost-effective model, or restrict prompts to providers that meet a chosen data policy. Client SDKs and an Agent SDK that handles tool calls, loops and state are available when raw HTTP is not enough. The free plan includes 25 or more free models, with request caps and a daily limit, along with community support. Paid use is pay-as-you-go with no minimum and no lock-in: inference is billed at the provider's list price, and OpenRouter charges 5.5% when you buy credits on the Standard plan (8% on Business). Failed attempts are not charged for model tokens. Business and Enterprise tiers add in-region routing and data policy controls.

  • Single endpoint across providers
  • Automatic provider fallback
  • OpenAI-compatible requests
  • Client and agent SDKs
  • Hosted web chat
  • Model and price catalog
  • Per-key credit caps
  • Data policy routing
